I love Escaflowne, its been my favorite anime for ten years. :)

My favorite character…well, really I love them all. I used to be OBSESSED with Van when I was 12 (when I first watched it) but now, I guess I’d have to say my favorite characters are Folken, Dilandau and Hitomi. I can’t pick just one :P

And just to answer some questions…

Why did everyone like Hitomi? - Well she was different from everyone else. She was the beacon of hope, always had a positive attitude and always wanted to genuinely help people. Everyone always went to her for advice, rather it be just to talk or for a tarot reading. She also did not keep her guard up, she was also very trustworthy. Just as she told Folken, “If I keep my guard up well then you won’t trust me, we’d never trust each other”. As for liking in a romantic sense, the above reasons can go with this. Allen, however, only liked her to fill the void of his sister being gone just as he used Milerna to fill the void of his now dead lover Marlene. It can be seen as more than just that, but towards the end even he comes to that conclusion. Van, I think he liked Hitomi because he was opposite of her for her being positive, an outlook he struggled to have throughout the series. Opposites do attract. They both helped each other become better people I think.

Why does Hitomi like Allen more than Van? - At first it was like that, but I think it was only because Allen was so flirtatious and so forward about his feelings. Hitomi never had a boyfriend, she only crushed hard on Amano so maybe she liked getting the attention. Allen also looked like Amano, which made it even more appealing to Hitomi. Van wasn’t very blunt with his feelings at all, Hitomi didn’t have a clue or at least tried not to notice it. Van was always too shy to say anything to Hitomi about how he felt.

Why is Hitomi so weak? - There’s different definitions on what could be considered weak depending on who you talk to. To me, I find Hitomi to be very strong, she may not have fought with a sword or guymelef, but she had her own ways of being strong. Just as I said, she has a very positive outlook despite on what she’s been through. She is able to trust people, even if they were once on the bad side something Van couldn’t do, and must have regretted for a long time had the series continued (I mean, with Folken). These traits can make a person a strong human being, you don’t need to fight to be considered strong.

Ummm. I don’t know if I have one of these right now like presently. xD I know I did in the past, a lot actually..maybe because I’m with James I just don’t feel the need to idolize characters in a romantic sense anymore? I dunno.

 We’ll just say the Fanel brothers. Van I obsessed over in junior high, and Folken is the male character I seem to droolover when I watch Escaflowne nowadays. @w@

The Vision of Escaflowne

This anime is not only bursting with nostalgia for me, but on its own its a beautiful anime unlike any other. A great cast of characters, straight story and no filler, beautiful music by THE Yoko Kano. I love how the story focuses on destiny and altering fate. Its a very interesting anime storywise. There is romance and love triangles that makes it shoujo, and violent fight scenes that makes it shonen. And it also has mecha in it, THE only show that I really, really love that involves mecha. Hell, I LOVE the mecha fight scenes *w* The characters all have their own story to tell as well, even the minor characters. Everything about this anime makes it worthwhile and its a real shame it wasn’t popular in Japan and it didn’t have the budget to be even better and fill in the gaps towards the end. I really wish the movie took place after the series…instead of an alternate universe… -sigh- .__. whyyyy.

What was your favorite part of the episode?

When you see Van talking to Balgus..just having a taste of what’s to come. I love how it starts as a typical shoujo..a girl loving a guy and its just not meant to be, but its THAT AND MORE. ;w; My other favorite part is the whole dragonslaying part of the episode..I wish Van ALWAYS wore that kind of armor..though maybe one that’s more..er..lasting. xD I also MUST say the part when you first see the Moon and Earth hanging in the sky..it brought tears to my eyes. ;-; I’m such a sappy fan xDD Its also very cute to see such a bold Hitomi asking for Amano’s kiss to be her first if she completed the run on time. Soooo cute *^*

What was your least favorite part of the episode?

Ummm =w= I dunno honestly. I guess because its just when things get started..so you don’t see any of the other characters, like Folken, Allen and Dilandau. the scene with Amano and Hitomi will always be creepy to me =w=; how he leaned into her while she was in bed…i don’t know. XDD; when I was younger I watched it in Japanese and didn’t quite understand what ‘sempai’ meant, I thought it may have meant coach or something..so that scene just always creeped me out. XD

Why do you think Hitomi understands Van’s language?

This always bugged me about the dub, how they didn’t make him speak a strange tongue,they made him speak the same language in a way that only made him look like a brat xD not that Van wasn’t but still. It is an interesting question. Maybe its kind of like Harry Potter..how he spoke another language (Parseltongue) without even realizing it. I’d like to think maybe, like her grandmother, maybe she was just born with this knowledge. Maybe it has something to do with having the pendant for so long. Such a very interesting question.

Someone posted recently how they wished there was a cosplay of Folken, Naria and Eriya from this particular scene…..well here is one I found :] there’s a Merle too..though it kinda ruins it since its just the three of them in that scene ;w; but oh well she could easily be cropped out lol

How I FEEEEEL about this character

Merle is so adorable :3 she is brutally honest and can be a bit of a bitch. A lot of Escaflowne fans I encounter really don’t like her..and I really can’t see why. She fits under the category of ‘tsundere’ on the surface yes but she has so much depth. yeah she was mean to Hitomi, but only because she didn’t want Van to get hurt. And sometimes, it wasn’t even out of that, she just has a playful personality and probably really liked Hitomi a lot.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Uh no one. XDD; I know people will probably be like..But what about Vaaaaan? No..just no..I would like to think she does meet someone, but when she is older, and over her obsession with Van.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Van of course. Their bond is such a strong friendship, no, more like family between a very close brother and sister. (Not that most people go around licking their brother’s face LOL I think that is more so her trait as being a cat and showing affection) She really cares about Van..you see even as kids she worried about Van the same way she does during the series.

My unpopular opinion about this character

Like I said before, she looks after Van and doesn’t want him to get hurt, especially when it came to Hitomi. She knew even before Hitomi that she loves Van, but had feelings for Allen as well. I think the fact that she also comes from another world played a role as well in Merle not wanting Hitomi involved with Van..coz she’ll only leave one day, making Van suffer loss again and pain. A lot of people think she purely hates Hitomi for these reasons (mostly for wanting to be with Van herself), but she doesn’t! Yeah she did bitchy things like steal her pendant and her food..but it was all her playful, cat-like persona. If you have a cat (or even a dog) they take things that interest them. Cats more so, LOVE shiny things, and things that swing around. She also took her food in away that a dog or cat may go through your stuff, like a garbage can, and invite themselves to a buffet XDD She doesn’t do it all out of hate, because she doesn’t hate Hitomi. Hell, in the beginning of the series when Hitomi is crying, she tries her best (in a rather immature, childish way) to console her. She also licks her when Van saves Hitomi during the episodes with Zongi and she saw the awful vision of him dying. This also shows two things that 1) She really cares about Hitomi, if she didn’t she would maybe have been relieved but she wouldn’t have licked her… and 2) Licking someone isn’t just reserved to Van which makes it even more clear that she doesn’t love Van in a romantic way! I think Merle picks on Hitomi for the same reasons I make fun of some of my friends XD She really loves her deep down (friendship-wise) and its just fun to pick on her.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Well..I really wish it was shown how they found Merle, and if she had any siblings. I was so interested in this, back 10 years ago I made my own OC. I forget her real name, but she is Merle’s sister who destroys their homeland and joins Zaibach. xD She was under Dilandau’s care, and was very loyal to him in ways Merle was to Van but doesn’t love him romantically either. I think if the budget was better they would have definitely shown Merle’s past..and even better, make it very important to the present storyline.
